Kathy Mickelson, BSMs. Mickelson earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Psychology at St. Cloud State University and has worked for many years in the mental health field with a diverse set of diagnoses and levels of care. She most recently worked at a partial hospitalization program for five years, where she utilized evidenced-based treatments to help children and adolescents with eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, and anxiety disorders, while also treating co-occurring conditions such as depression, trauma, and school avoidance. Ms. Mickelson also spent years working at the inpatient unit at a Twin Cities children’s hospital, which led her to help start the Center for the Treatment of Eating Disorders program, where she assisted critically ill patients restore weight. In her career she has also worked in a day treatment program for youth and their families in the court system, in early childhood, family education, and special education within the public school system, with a specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Ms. Mickelson draws upon her decades of experience and vast knowledge in her approach to therapy. She has been trained in Family Based Therapy for Eating Disorders, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD), and Behavioral Activation for depression. Ms. Mickelson brings her nurturing, enthusiastic, and playful spirit to therapy, where she develops connections with clients using humor, interaction, and compassion. She draws upon a person-centered, humanistic approach, which builds upon the strengths of the client and family to promote meaningful lives and relationships. Ms. Mickelson believes everyone holds inherent value and worth, which she displays in her commitment to honoring diversity, inclusivity, social justice, and cultural sensitivity. A resident of the Twin Cities, Ms. Mickelson is pursuing a Master’s degree in Counseling and Psychological Services from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. She is happiest when spending time with her two adult children and family, partner, and lifelong friends. |
